This Saturday is a good one if you love a packed schedule. The Farmers’ Market in Brazos County opens at 8 AM in Midtown Park, and by 10 AM the 3rd Annual Brazos Valley Family Expo is kicking off at The Brazos Center on Briarcrest Drive, running all the way to 4 PM. Two great local events, back to back, on the same day — which means a lot of BCS families are about to be out of the house from breakfast to late afternoon.
We love a stacked Saturday like this one. Here’s how we’d plan the day if it were us, plus a few thoughts on where your pets fit into all of it.
Start slow at the Farmers’ Market (8 AM – 12 PM)
The Farmers’ Market in Brazos County has been a Bryan tradition for a long time, and Saturday mornings in Midtown Park still have that same easy, “no rush” feel. Get there early for the best pick of produce, eggs, honey, and baked goods, and plan on the kids wanting to sample their way down the row of vendors. If the weather’s kind, it’s genuinely one of the nicer ways to start a summer morning in Bryan.
A few practical notes for families:
– Go early. Between the July heat and the popular vendors selling out, 8–9 AM is the sweet spot.
– Bring water and shade. Strollers plus a midsummer sun can be a rough combo by 10:30.
– Dogs are generally welcome and it’s a pretty dog-friendly crowd, but a market full of strollers, food samples, and tight aisles isn’t always the most relaxing outing for a dog, especially if you’re planning to head straight to the Expo afterward.
Which brings us to timing: if you’re doing the market and the Expo, you’re looking at a solid 8-hour stretch away from home. That’s where a lot of our Lucky Paws BCS families start thinking ahead.
Head to the Brazos Valley Family Expo (10 AM – 4 PM)
The Brazos Valley Family Expo is now in its third year at The Brazos Center, and it’s grown into one of the better free things to do in College Station and Bryan on a summer Saturday. This year’s expo features more than 60 booths from local organizations and businesses, a Kid Zone play area, character meet-and-greets, live performances, and free face painting courtesy of CSISD. Food trucks will be on site for lunch and snacks, and admission and parking are both free.
Because it’s indoors at The Brazos Center, it’s also a great midday retreat from the heat — the kind of event where you can genuinely plan to stay for hours without anyone melting down (kids or parents). A few tips:
– Plan to eat there. With food trucks on-site, you don’t need to break up the day with a separate lunch stop.
– Budget more time than you think. With 60+ booths and a full Kid Zone, families often stay two to three hours longer than planned.
– Leave the pets at home. Between the crowds, the character appearances, and a building full of unfamiliar noise, an indoor expo like this is genuinely a better outing without a dog along for the ride.
Where a full Saturday leaves your pets
If your family is out the door by 7:30 for the market and doesn’t roll back home until mid-afternoon, that’s a long stretch for a dog or cat to go without a bathroom break, food, water, or just a little company. This is exactly the kind of Saturday our team gets asked about a lot this time of year — Aggieland’s calendar is full of these all-day, all-family events, and pets end up along for the ride whether they’re built for it or not.
A bundled visit is usually the easiest fix. Instead of trying to squeeze a dog walk in between the market and the expo, we can schedule:

– A midday check-in timed around lunch at the expo, so your dog isn’t stuck holding it until 4 PM
– Or one longer visit that covers the whole window, if your pet is the type who’s happy with a long walk and settling in for the afternoon
